Half-year Report: Customs intercepts contrabands, smuggled goods worth N9.27bn in Apapa port, as revenue rises by 35%

Offficers of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Port Command intercepted 27 containers of contrabands and smuggled goods with duty paid value (DPV) of N9.27 billion between January and June, 2025, as the command intensified enforcement operations to curtail importation of illicit goods and improve security.

Within the period, the command also collected record-breaking revenue of ₦1.378 trillion, representing 35% increase from the revenue generated during the same period of 2024.

Olomu had on Tuesday disclosed his command’s revenue strides for the half year, 2025 when he paid a courtesy visit to the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) headquarters in Apapa, Lagos.

Speaking to journalists on his command’s half-year 2025 report, Customs Area Controller, Apapa Port, Babatunde Olomu said the seized contrabands and smuggled goods were unregistered pharmaceuticals, expired food products, Codeine cough syrup, used clothing, stolen vehicles and wildlife parts, in violation of the CITES treaty

He disclosed that three bonded terminals were sealed for various infractions, with one already facing prosecution.

Olomu attributed the feat to diligent officers, improved compliance from traders, and the strategic leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

“We insisted on maximum revenue collection and plugged leakages through effective demand notices,” Olomu said.

The Controller also disclosed several other achievements recorded by his command during the period to include the first-ever use of the Single Goods Declaration (SGD) via the new B’Odogwu digital trade platform, an indigenous technological innovation that streamlines cargo clearance.

“We have recently collaborated with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and industry stakeholders to revive rail cargo movement from Apapa Port. This step is necessary to help decongest the port and the port access roads, as well cut logistics costs,” he said.

The Area Controller commended inter-agency collaboration collaboration with other sister agencies, especially in intelligence sharing, describing it as “a critical force in defeating criminal networks.”
