Following the recent recertification of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, stakeholders in the Nigerian aviation sector have praised the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, for her unwavering commitment and leadership throughout the recertification process.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has voiced its support for Kuku’s leadership. In his address, Acting Director-General Captain Chris Najomo emphasized the complexity of the certification process, highlighting the significant challenges involved. He pointed out that FAAN and NCAA had to address 29 and 136 outstanding issues for Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and the Murtala Mohamed International Airport, Lagos, respectively.
“It was no mean feat,” he remarked, stating that this accomplishment reflects the commitment and collaboration between both agencies, working diligently to enhance safety and ensure compliance with international standards.
Yakubu Dati, former General Manager of FAAN, in a statement said achievements by the Kuku-led management of FAAN are results of hardwork and dedication having trained 3,219 staff and critical stakeholders in record time.
“In barely 11 months in office, FAAN has been ranked among the Top 5 Most Improved Agencies in Nigeria by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), received two prestigious safety awards from the Airport Council International (ACI), elevating her into a global player as its Board member, ACI Africa region.” he stated.
According to Dati, this milestone has projected Mrs Kuku as a tested technocrat who has keyed into President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in aviation sector. A cross section of the aviation stakeholders including including Airline operators, Tourism and Hospitality sectors emphasized how Kuku’s initiatives have fostered confidence in Nigeria’s air transport sector, ultimately benefiting both airlines and passengers. They believe that well-certified airports are crucial for attracting international travelers, boosting tourism revenue, and enhancing Nigeria’s image as a global destination.
He noted that several passenger advocacy groups have also expressed their appreciation for the improvements made in airports.
“Travelers have reported a better overall experience, thanks to enhancements in service delivery, security measures, and facilities. These sentiments were echoed by representatives from travel associations who commend Kuku’s efforts in prioritizing customer satisfaction. Foreign airlines operating in Nigeria have acknowledged the positive changes resulting from the recertification process. They believe that the improved airport conditions will facilitate better operational efficiency and enhance connectivity, benefiting both Nigerian and international passengers,” Dati said.
In her response during the ceremony marking the recertification, she expressed gratitude for the support she has received from the Hon Minister, Festus kenyamo, her management team, staff and stakeholders throughout the recertification journey.
“This achievement reflects not only our hard work but also the commitment and expertise of everyone involved,” she said.
