Operatives of the Department of the State Service (DSS) have arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero was arrested in the morning today at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Ajaero was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official assignment when DSS picked him up.
According to sources, Ajaero was billed to attend the conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the United Kingdom on Monday (today).
DSS has not officially disclosed why Ajaero was arrested but, said Ajaero had been handed over to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Last Monday, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had disclosed that it had invited the labour leader, who had been at consistent loggerheads with the Bola Tinubu-led federal government of welfare of workers.
The police sad Ajaero was invited for questioning over alleged ties with one Andrew Wynne, a Briton, who was accused of an attempt to overthrow the president of Nigeria.
Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, told journalists on Monday September 2, 2024 that the police have declared Wynne wanted for allegedly plotting to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government.
The Briton was declared wanted alongside one Ehis Obinyan, a Nigerian.
Adejobi said Wynne rented a space at the NLC headquarters in Abuja for Iva Valley Bookshop and established Stars of Nations Schools as a “cover for his subversive activities.”
The force spokesperson claimed the invitation extended to NLC leaders had nothing to do with activities of the union’s leadership.
