World-leading shipowner, Maersk on Wednesday marked a significant milestone in its decarbonisation and fleet expansion strategy with the unveiling of “Berlin Maersk,” a 17,480TEU container vessel equipped with dual-fuel methanol propulsion.
The global shipping and logistic company, Maersk, christened the newly built vessel Berlin Maersk at a ceremony which took place at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
According to a G-Captain report, Berlin Maersk is the first in a new series of 17,480TEU container vessels equipped with dual-fuel methanol propulsion. HHI is building six vessels in this new series, all set for delivery in 2025.
The low emission dual-fuel vessel is the 14th dual-fuel vessel to join the Maersk fleet and is the largest methanol-powered ship delivered to the company to date. It features a wider beam than the earlier Ane Maersk class, enabling higher container capacity.
The newbuild vessel is scheduled to make its maiden port call in Shanghai on 7th July, after which it will commence operations on Maersk’s AE3 service route connecting Eastern Asia with Northern Europe.
Berlin Maersk is a Sweden-flagged vessel measuring a length of 350 metres and a width of 56 metres.
