The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday evening denied comments earlier attributed to it about the arrest of social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The EFCC via its official X page, @officialEFCC posted screenshots of the BBC Pidgin headline and a tweet by broadcast journalist, Oseni Rufai and marked them as “fake news,” without providing further details.
BBC Pidgin was first to break the news of the EFCC allegedly confirming that it arrested VDM following several petitions filed against him. The report said the EFCC declined giving any name of the petitioners.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, speaking to BBC News Pidgin, was reported to have said the agency detained VDM in response to a series of allegations from different individuals.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised by some petitioners,” Oyewale was quoted.
Nigerians have begun to react to EFCC’s quick u-turn on the matter. Thousands of Nigerians have already reacted to the development on X, bemoaning the EFCC for denying the comments without providing further details on why VDM was arrested.
