Nigerians disappointed, angry as Dangote Refinery reduces fuel price by only N20

by Samson Echenim

Nigerians have gone on rampage to express their anger on social media tweeting platform, X after Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced a reduction in the prevailing price of its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as fuel, from N990/litre to N970/litre for the marketers on Sunday.

Dangote Refinery in a statement posted on its X handle and signed by the Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, said the reduction was to appreciate Nigerians for their support as the year came to an end.

However, this did not make Nigerians happy, as they expressed anger and disappointment, saying they expected the company to reduce price of fuel significantly since it is getting crude oil products locally.

The statement from Dangote read in part: “As the year comes to an end, this is our way of appreciating the good people of Nigeria for their unwavering support in making the Refinery a dream come true. In addition, this is to thank the government for their support as this will complement the measures put in place to encourage domestic enterprise for our collective well- being.

“While the refinery would not compromise on the quality of its petroleum products, we assure you of best quality products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

“We are determined to keep ramping up production to meet and surpass our domestic fuel consumption; thus, dispelling any fear of a shortfall in supply.”

Nigerians reacted immediately to the statement posted on X at 2.54pm on Sunday expressing their anger and disappointment over the N20 per litre reduction which is not likely to effect reduction in the pump price.

Many of the people who reacted indicated that they expected Dangote to sell fuel at between N400 and N550 per litre. Read their comments on X below:
