Many people were reportedly burnt beyond recognition and several houses and vehicles razed as a tanker carrying premium motor spirit (PMS) popularly known as fuel exploded in a busy area of Agbor, Delta State around 10am today.
The Nigerian Economy gathered that the first Sunday tragedy occurred when the fuel tanker suffered a brake failure and somersaulted, before exploding at a busy area popularly called Garrage, near a First Bank branch and a Mobil filling station. The area is the business hub of Agbor, where several motor parks and the popular Boji-Boji Owa Market is located.
Several persons were feared dead. Our correspondent reported five bodies burnt beyond recognition, one of which was a young woman being taken away in a pick-up van by rescue workers, as seen in a viral video taken from the tragic incident on Sunday.
According to an eye witness, the driver was trying to make a turn on the ever-busy old Lagos/Asaba Road that runs through Agbor main town.
From other videos seen by this medium, some residents and passersby were helpless in trying to put out the flames as firefighters were yet to arrive at the scene.
Several houses and vehicles around the scene were severely burnt, and some were still engulfed by the raging fire.
The body of a car owner who was caught up by the flames could be seen on the road.
