Reps pass N70,000 minimum wage, IGP tenure elongation bills into laws

The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking to increase minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 into a law.

Reps have also passed into a law, another amendment bill seekkng to allow the Inspector of Police (IGP) finish his term as indicated in his letter of appointment for the IGP position.

According to a Vanguard report, the lower chamber on Tuesday passed into law a 70,000 Minimum Wage following a letter from President Tinubu seeking approval.

The bill which sought to amend the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 8, 2019 to increase the national minimum wage and reduce the time for periodic review of the national minimum wage from five years to three years.

In a letter earlier read on the floor from the President by Speaker Rep Tajudeen Abbas, President Tinubu appealed to the Lawmakers to expedite the passage of the minimum wage bill to ensure immediate implementation for the benefit of Nigerian workers.

According to the details of the bill, “The National Minimum Wage Act, No. 8, 2019 (in this Bill referred to as “the Principal Act”) is amended as set out in this Bill.

“The Principal Act then amended as set out under this Bill: (a) section 3(1) of the Principal Act is amended by substituting for the figure, “N30,000”, the figure,”N70,000 in line one; and (b) section 3(4) of the Principal Act is amended by substituting for the words, “five years”, the words, “three years”.

“This Bill may be cited as the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Bill,

The House of Representatives also passed a bill seeking to enable a person appointed to the office of Inspector General of Police to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment.

President in another letter also wrote the Lawmaker seeking amendment to the Nigeria Police Act in accordance with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The amendment sought to alter the Police in relation to the appointment and tenure of office of the Inspector General of Police.

According to the details of the bill, “The Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (“Principal Act”) is amended as set out in this Act.

“Section 18 of the Principal Act is amended by adding a new subsection (8A) -“(8A) Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-section (8) of this section, any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of Section 7(6) of this Act”.

“This Bill may be cited as the Nigeria Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
